During the past 2000 years, 263 popes have sat on St. Peter's Chair. Well over 200 have been of Italian descent. The remainder have been from other ethnic backgrounds: there were 15 French, 10 Greek, 6 Syrian, 5 German, 2 Dalmation, 2 African, 3 Spanish and 1 each of Galilean (St. Peter), Portugese, English, Dutch and Polish. Fr. Dennis Michelis has produced a fascinating study of the ten popes of Greek descent who occupied the Chair of St. Peter.
