This book is Constantine Cavarnos' third one in which he presents aspects of Photios Kontoglou's philosophy of the fine arts. In his first book, Byzantine Sacred Art, he presents selected writings of this recent icon painter, writer, and philosopher, according to the Tradition of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. In his second book, Meetings with Kontoglou, he presents lively discussions which he had with Kontoglou on Byzantine iconography, music, and on contemporary trends in the arts and thought. Here, Cavarnos gives a concise account of Kontoglou's general philosophy of the fine arts, and presents Kontoglou's defense of the thesis that works of true art are always traditional, grounded in a great art tradition. He defends this thesis with wisdom and vigor, giving telling examples drawn—from his rich resources as a practicing artist and as thinker acquainted with the history of the arts and the great art traditions.
